It is the most backward constituency in the district Key constituency: Raichur Rural

D.K. Kishan Rao

Raichur: Kalmala constituency, which has been renamed Raichur Rural after the delimitation process, is the most backward constituency in Raichur district. But many legislators who won from the constituency have been Ministers.

Most number of villages

This Assembly segment has 198 villages, the highest among all constituencies in the district. Most of the villages have no irrigation facility.

Only a few villages located at the tail end of the command area of the Tungabhadra Left Bank Canal are partially irrigated.

The former Ministers Sudhindra Rao Kasbe, Raja Amareshwara Naik and Muniyappa Muddappa, who were elected from the constituency, did nothing much for the development of the constituency, which is mainly dependent on agriculture. The water shortage in tail-end region of the Tungabhadra project has persisted for four decades.

Mr. Kasbe, who is now in the Congress, is maintaining a low political profile. Mr. Muddappa recently joined the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) from the Janata Dal (Secular) and is not a contender in the coming elections.

But Mr. Naik of the Congress is a strong contender to contest from the constituency.

His younger brother, Raja Rayappa Naik, has also sought ticket to contest from the constituency.

Candidates not named

The BJP and the JD(S) have yet to announce their candidates. The former MP Raja Rangappa Naik, who joined the BJP last year, is a strong contender for party ticket. Daddal Bassangouda, who recently joined the party from the JD(S), is another contender who has the support of party leaders in the district.

With the departure of Mr. Muddappa, the JD(S) does not have a suitable candidate to field from the constituency.
