Security inadequate: Jayalalithaa

Special Correspondent

CHENNAI: Former Chief Minister Jayalalithaa on Monday submitted before the High Court that electricity connection had been denied to old buildings on Kodanad Estate, where she was staying. Security personnel are lodged in these buildings.

In written arguments on her writ petition seeking a direction to authorities to ensure full protection to her at her residence, she said though the security officers insisted that focus lights should be installed in and around her residence, the government had denied power supply.

Last week, Justice M. Jaichandren had reserved orders on the plea. The court had said that written arguments, if any, could be submitted by Monday.

Ms. Jayalalithaa submitted that the official guidelines to provide security were only for the minimum security. Maximum security should be given taking into account the level of threat she faced. The guidelines did not prohibit the government from providing maximum, full and complete security.

Her ‘right to life’ required it. She said security provided to her was inadequate considering the magnitude of the threat to her.
