Somnath for RTI Act to cover Speaker’s office

Special Correspondent

NEW DELHI: Lok Sabha Speaker Somnath Chatterjee on Monday said that under the Right to Information Act people should be able to get any information they want, except that which is related to security issues.

Speaking informally to reporters, Mr. Chatterjee said he had no problem with the RTI Act covering the high constitutional office of the Speaker.

He wanted the functioning of the parliamentary standing committees to be thrown open to the media but the proposal did not find favour with the majority of party leaders.

All citizens had the constitutional right to information and the Act was the only instrument which enabled them to exercise it.
