CHENNAI: The inaugural day of the Tamil Nadu Football Assocition’s Champion club tournament saw Youth FC, Nagapattinam, trouncing Sathak Engineering College, Ramnad, 10-0 and Nethaji SC routing Venu FC, Coimbatore, 9-2. The goal spree was indicative of the standard of the contests — poor to say the least. The Coimbatore league leader Venu FC hardly challenged the city rival, which had finished no higher than eighth in the local league. Nonetheless, with two Nigerians — Mathew Livinus and Ogar Sundyayuk (substitute) — in its frontline, the Nethaji attack played havoc with the opponent’s defence. Initially though it was Gunasekaran and then Kousikan who put Nethaji ahead in eight minutes with two quick goals. After that, Mathew took over and when Ogar entered for Kamesh, it was the Nigerians all the way. Both moved in tandem and either of them ensured that a goal-bound shot was taken in each foray. It is a different matter that between the two there must have nearly half a dozen missed chances. But, Nethaji could afford such lapses on the day for in the end it was a handsome win, after leading 3-1 at the half way stage. Mathew scored four goals and Ogar three to complete Gunasekaran’s and Kousikan’s initial work. Jayaprakash and substitute Ubaidur Rahiman scored for the loser. In the earlier match, Md. Udhiman (three), H Sidiq, Ramzan Ali , H.G. Ansari (all two each) and A.M. Ashiq were the scorers for Youth FC.
