Panel to comprise ministers and officials To meet on Wednesday to chalk out an action plan Thiruvananthapuram: A meeting convened by Chief Minister V.S. Achuthanandan here on Monday decided to set up a high-level committee, comprising ministers and officials, to prepare and monitor the implementation of a comprehensive flood control project for the city. Briefing mediapersons after the meeting, Mr. Achuthanandan said the committee would recommend emergency measures and long-term solutions to the problem of recurrent flooding in the Thampanoor and East Fort areas. The committee would function under the Cabinet sub-committee comprising Public Works Minister Mons Joseph, Water Resources Minister N.K. Premachandran, Local Self-government Minister Paloli Mohammed Kutty and Law Minister M. Vijayakumar. Mr. Joseph will be the convenor of the committee. V. Sivankutty and V. Surendran Pillai, MLAs; Mayor C. Jayan Babu, District Collector Sanjay Kaul and secretaries of Public Works, Irrigation and Local Self-government departments will be members. Mr. Achuthanandan said the committee had been directed to come up with an emergency response in 15 days. The long-term strategy would be submitted later, he said. The committee is scheduled to meet here on Wednesday to work out the action plan. The meeting was attended by ministers M. Vijayakumar and Mons Joseph, the two MLAs, Mayor C. Jayan Babu, Public Works Department Secretary Tom Jose, Urban Affairs Secretary T.K. Jose, Collector Sanjay Kaul, Corporation Secretary Johnson K. George and senior officials representing various departments.
