CRACKDOWN: Corporation authorities demolishing an unauthorised construction at Ambalamukku in the city on Monday. — Thiruvananthapuram: The city Corporation continued its demolition drive against unauthorised buildings at Ambalamukku on Monday. Assisted by an earth-mover, a team of 25 workers pulled down nine constructions that were found to have violated building rules. Town Planning Officer K.S. Sasikumar who led the drive said other building owners who were served notice had started demolishing unauthorised structures on their own. He said most of the demolished buildings had violated setback regulations. “In some cases, the owners had violated Rule 100 of the Building Rules under which an applicant can secure a permit for maintenance, extension or changing the roof of an existing building. The provision was misused to bypass setback requirements and add valuable floor space after demolishing the old building”, he said. With Monday’s operation, the Corporation has demolished 17 buildings on the Peroorkada-Ambalamukku stretch of the main road where road widening works are on.
