Civility goes up in smoke
For the hundreds of people who flock to the beaches of Kovalam to beat the summer heat, a major irritant is the presence of smokers. As lifeguards and police constables look on, smokers puff away, turning a blind eye to pained expressions and a deaf ear to muttered protests.
Even complaints to the authorities fail to curb this menace. To those who actually muster up the courage to ask smokers to snuff out their cigarette pat comes the answer, “Where is it written that we should not smoke here? Show me a board or a sign.”
Of course in the expanse of the beach, there is no such sign. But then there is no sign of civil behaviour at a public place either.
