NEW DELHI: Over 400 public, government and special schools in the Capital joined hands to raise public awareness about climate change on the occasion of Earth Day at Dilli Haat here on Tuesday. The event, titled “Mitigating climate change -- Towards carbon neutrality”, was organised by Development Alternatives, a pioneer organisation in the field of bringing such vital issues to the forefront. The organisation is also involved in the CLEAN-India programme (Community Lead Environment Action Network) that is supported by the Union Ministry of Environment and Forests. Educative messagesAn informative booklet that contained tips on preventing climate change and also included a carbon emission calculator in the CD format was released on the occasion. The function also saw several children forming a human chain, displaying placards with educative messages and staging street plays to raise awareness about the grave consequences of climate change. Global warming effectsThe earth’s climate has changed many times over millions of years, sometimes slowly and sometimes with alarming quickness. Scientists have estimated that a warming of just 2 degrees Celsius would put as many as 30 per cent of the species on earth at risk of extinction. However, it is still possible to prevent further global warming and protect the health of our planet for future generations. It is urgently required that scientists, governments, business houses and individuals get together to formulate a cohesive policy regarding this issue.
