Cooperative Bank staff threaten agitation

Staff Reporter

KARUR: To highlight their charter of demands, including disbursal of pending wages, the Tamil Nadu Primary Cooperative Bank All Staff Association has threatened to stage a three-tier struggle over the next fortnight.

Addressing media persons here on Saturday, the Association State general secretary C. Kuppusamy said that there were over 4,600 primary cooperative banks in the State in which the Government waived the short-term crop loans, mid-term loans and jewel loans pending till March 2006. That completely affected over 1,200 institutions that were left with no money transaction even to meet the expenses of salary, administrative bills and other essential staff expenditure. That pushed to the brink several thousand employees who could not get even their salary.

When the issue was taken with the government, a partial relief was provided in June 2007. After that, over 18,000 staff have not received their salary. When we were bracing for a struggle, the State Government called us for talks and in February 2008 and agreed to pay the pending salary for all categories of employees and meet other pending demands.

Mr. Kuppusamy claimed that so far no follow up action was taken. A section of the shop staff were brought under revised salary structure, but that too was clarified that it was only for regular staff. There were staff who had put in over 20 years of service but have not been regularized. People like them stand to lose heavily, by remaining eligible only for a paltry consolidated wage.

To highlight our charter of demands the Association has planned a three-stage struggle in the next few days, involving over 22,000 fair price shop employees and cooperative bank staff numbering 45,000. On April 28, a demonstration would be held in front of the Fort St. George, and in the next phase the distressed employees would go on strike from May 2.

In the final phase the employees would resort to a dharna before the Secretariat if the demands were not met before then, he said.
