PUDUCHERRY: Chief Minister N.Rangasamy on Tuesday released Rs.11.65 lakh to self-help groups, non-governmental organisations and principal investigators of various academic institutions and research institutes in the Union Territory for celebrating the Earth Day. This year, the Earth Day is being celebrated by the Pondicherry Pollution Control Committee by organising various environment awareness activities through SHGs and NGOs in Puducherry and Karaikal regions, official sources said. Mr.Rangasamy handed over Rs.5,000 each to 27 SHGs and six NGOs belonging to both the regions. He also released Rs. 10 lakh as grant-in-aid for carrying out research projects by 15 principal investigators on related subjects, the sources said. The SHGs and NGOs would focus on activities such as cleaning up public places, ponds, drains and water bodies and organising exhibitions, eco-fest and green fairs on protection of the environment and conservation of forests. Cultural programmes including puppet shows, street plays, folk dances and songs would be organised as part of the celebrations.
