The Lord’s abode dazzles in new glory

Shining peaks: The newly renovated ‘rajagopuram’ sparkling in light at Sankarankoil.
Thousands of devotees have converged in Sankarankoil, though it is not the time for ‘Aadi Thavasu.’ It is the special occasion of kumbhabhishekam of Lord Sankaranarayana and Sri Goamthi Ambal to be held on April 23 after twelve years. The famous temple, built by Ukkirama Pandiyan in 900 AD in this holy town on Tirunelveli–Rajapalayam stretch depicts the concept of ‘Hari’ and ‘Haran’ being one God.
Here the ‘moolavar’ is ‘Sankara Narayana’, as Sankara (Lord Shiva) and Narayana (Lord Vishnu) are in one form. The idol will have the markings of Sankara on one half and of Narayana on the other half.
Another presiding deity is Aavudai Ambal or Gomathi Ambal and it is believed that the sacred sand ‘puttru mann’ in Gomathi Ambal Temple cures diseases.
With the renovation work of the temple being completed, the 125 feet-tall ‘rajagopuram’ dazzles in the sunrays. Works including construction of a new ‘mandapam’ at the entrance, painting of ‘rajagopuram,’ laying of granite slabs at ‘sannidhi,’ cement flooring inside the temple etc., has been carried on an outlay of Rs.1.50 crore. The ‘kumbhabhishekam’ water will be sprayed on the devotees through a power sprayer.
The district administration has declared a local holiday.
Elaborate security arrangements in view of the celebrations have been made and minor traffic diversions within the town are effected. Vehicles coming from Rajapalayam should halt near Thanga Mariamman Temple and the vehicles entering the town from Thiruvenkatam and Kazhugumalai should go to new bus-stand.
Vehicles coming from Tirunelveli should halt at Government Hospital and the space near NRU Fuel Station has been allotted for the vehicles coming from Puliyangudi and Sernthamaram.
