“Prevent duplicity of membership”

In different self-help groups of women

VIRUDHUNAGAR: The Virudhunagar Collector, V. Chandrasekaran, has asked the voluntary organisations to prevent duplicity of membership in different self help groups of women.

Addressing the coordination committee meeting on Mahalir Thittam on Tuesday, Mr. Chandrasekaran said that efforts were taken to form 360 SHGs in panchayats benefited under Anaithu Grama Anna Marumalarchi Thittam during 2007-08. Similarly another 146 SHGs would be formed in other panchayats, 50 SHGs for women in urban areas and 300 groups for men.

Stating that new SHGs would be formed under the voluntary organisations that would get recognition from the Mahalir Thittam, he asked the organisations to avoid members in one group joining the new groups.

The groups that were formed last year would be provided basic training and job-oriented training in stitching, beautician, repairing electronic goods and food production. The trained groups would be given financial assistance with subsidy to improve their economic activity, he said. The district administration had earmarked over Rs. 35 crore for providing direct loan through banks.

Prompt repayment

Though by and large the groups were promptly repaying their loans, he said complaints of defaults by some groups and non cooperation from bankers on extending loans had come to the notice of the district administration. Special meetings of bankers and representatives of federations would be held at taluk level to sort out those issues.

Stating that 244 out of 450 panchayats have formed panchayat-level federation of SHGs last year, he said similar federations would be formed in the remaining 206 panchayats and would be given Rs. 10,000 incentive to each federation.

The Mahalir Thittam Officer, N. Savithiri, Lead Bank Manager, Sukumar, NABARD Manager, Manivannan, were among those who participated in the meeting.
