“Quota after obtaining panel views”

Special Correspondent

PUDUCHERRY: Chief Minister N.Rangasamy on Tuesday announced in the Assembly that the government was keen on implementing internal reservation for minorities and a decision would be made only after obtaining the views of the Backward Classes Commission in the Union Territory.

Responding to a calling attention motion moved by members of the PMK, the Congress, the AIADMK, the DMK the CPI , Mr.Rangasamy said the government had sought the opinion of the State-level B.C. Commission .

Shortly after receiving the commission’s recommendations, the government would work out the modalities of providing internal reservation for the minorities, he added.

Leader of the Opposition A.M.H.Nazeem (DMK) pleaded with the government to announce its decision on the issue before the conclusion of the budget session . R.K.R.Anantharaman (PMK) urged the government to announce the quota for Muslims and Christians on the basis of their population in the Union Territory.

A. Namassivayam (Congress) said the Welfare Department had not acted expeditiously on the issue.

Though the Assembly adopted a government resolution in favour of providing reservation for the minorities on February 27, 2006, the department had forwarded it to the Centre only after 14 months, he added.

A. Anbalagan (AIADMK) said that though the ruling party during the last Assembly elections had promised to give reservation for the minorities, the government had not acted on it. As there was no caste-based census after 1994, people were confused over the government’s stand.

Making a statement on the issue, Welfare Minister M.Kandasamy said a decision on the issue could be taken only after consulting the legislators at a meeting convened by the Chief Minister, besides eliciting the opinions of the B.C. Commission.
