Ryots trained in preparation of organic farming, eco-friendly inputs

KULITHALAI: Over 80 farmers from various states were exposed to facets of organic farming and eco-friendly inputs for sustainable agriculture as part of a two-day national level training-cum-workshop that concluded at Panikkampatti near here on Saturday.

The Organic Farming Association of India and Radio Trust conducted the workshop.

Farmers from Andhra Pradesh, Kerala, Maharashtra, Goa and several parts of Tamil Nadu, who participated in the workshop, were enlightened on the preparation and application of vermicompost, pancha kavya, lemon-egg-mixed solution, fish-mixed solution that were supposed to enhance agricultural productivity even in adverse conditions.

They were also taught nuances of preparing amirtha karaisal (herbal pesticide), pancha kavya, live mulching, etc.

At the farm of noted vermi compost expert N. Gopalakrishnan at Panikkampatti near here, farmers were trained in various methods of vermicomposting such as heaping method, tank method, low cost vermiculture and vermiwash preparation as also the housewife system of vermicompost preparation.

On the first day (Thursday) of the workshop in Tiruchi the participants were treated to a series of lecture demonstration conducted by eminent personalities in the field of sustainable farming and organic farming during the technical sessions.

While vermicompost expert Sultan Ahmed Ismail of Chennai detailed them on the advantages of organic inputs for vermiculture, organic farming expert G. Nammalwar explained them that amirtha karaisal and pancha kavya held the key to success in sustainable agriculture.

General Manager of EID Parry India Limited Mathialagan, Professor and Head, Krishi Vigyan Kendra, Sirugamani, SP. Ramanathan and others spoke.
