Naveen flayed on law and order

Capital city has become a safe haven for criminals, alleges NCP

BHUBANESWAR: The Nationalist Congress Party on Tuesday criticised the Naveen Patnaik government for its alleged failure to maintain law and order in the State.

At a press conference here, party State unit president Bijoy Mohapatra said that the State had not witnessed such deterioration in the law and order situation in the past 50 years.

The NCP leader said that Mr. Patnaik, who is holding the Home portfolio, was trying to escape from public criticism by just ordering probes and inquiries into various crimes.

Mr. Mohapatra alleged that the Capital city had become a safe haven for criminals under Mr. Patnaik’s rule. The Chief Minister should think of people, instead of providing security to officials having nexus with criminals and allowing gangsters to operate in the State without much trouble, Mr. Mohapatra alleged.

Referring to the controversy over the alleged nexus between criminals and government officials, Mr. Mohapatra alleged that criminals were also being extended political patronage to operate in the State. About the government’s decision to request the Lok Pal to probe into the alleged nexus between the criminals and officials, Mr. Mohapatra said Mr. Patnaik should come forward to say that he should also come under the purview of the Lok Pal probe. He further blamed the government for its failure to arrest the prime suspect in the murder of former coach of marathon boy Biranchi Das. “Transferring of some police officials did not mean action against the guilty.” As regards the sexual harassment of suspended lady marshal of the State Assembly Gayatri Panda, the NCP leader alleged that Mr. Patnaik never wanted the culprits to be taken to task.
