NEW DELHI: A Motor Accident Claims Tribunal has awarded a compensation of Rs.17.15 lakh to the family of a policeman who was mowed down by a mini-truck while on duty in 2006. Tribunal Judge Swarn Kanta said it was unfortunate that a policeman who was performing his duty when the entire city was sleeping lost his life in the accident. Apart from the compensation amount, the Judge also directed the insurance company to pay interest at 7.5 per cent per annum on the compensation amount to the family from the date of filing of the petition. Constable Shiv Kumar Sharma, who had won more than 100 commendations and rewards in his career, was on picket duty when a mini-truck driven by Prem Chand mowed him down near Raj Ghat on Ring Road around 1 a.m. on April 12, 2006. Sharma’s wife Archana along with her mother-in-law Shakuntala Sharma and minor children had filed the petition.
