HYDERABAD: An all-party meeting organised by the TDP here on Tuesday demanded cancellation of tenders called for drawing drinking water for the city from Yellampalli project on the Godavari in Karimnagar.

Instead, the meeting wanted the Government to draw water from Kanthalapalli also on the Godavari in Warangal as proposed by the Institution of Engineers and demanded a survey on a war footing. This takeoff point was not only 100 per cent dependable but had other advantages over Yellampalli. These include drawal of more water, lesser cost up to Rs. 6,000 crore, generation of 250 MW of power, shorter distance and early completion.

Krishna scheme

At the same time, the meeting made it clear that this should be taken up purely for the future requirements of the city and for now the Government should go ahead with the third phase of the Krishna water scheme as it was the most cost-effective plan. The meeting attended by senior leaders such as T. Devender Goud (TDP), Nomula Narasimhaiah (CPI-M), Chada Venkat Reddy (CPI) and K. Laxman (BJP), accused the Government of hastily calling tenders for drinking water scheme from Yellampalli, “just to benefit the contractors.”

Several other senior TDP leaders participated. Three former chief engineers, Anantaramulu, Venkataramana and Prabhakar Rao, gave their expert opinion in favour of Kanthalapalli.

‘False campaign’

Mr. Goud said a false campaign was being carried on by the Government that the Opposition was trying to put obstacles in the way of solving the drinking water scarcity permanently. All that the Opposition was saying was that the Government’s sudden action in getting water from Yellampalli looked suspicious and was even diluting the Pranahita- Chevella link project.

Mr. Narasimhaiah and Mr. Venkat Reddy said the Government would have to pay a heavy price if it goes ahead with drawal of water from Yellampalli, turning it into another Singur. Kanthalapalli appeared a better and reliable alternative drinking water source not only for the city but for Warangal and Nalgonda districts as well besides irrigation of three lakhs acres in drought-prone Nalgonda.
