NEW DELHI: Of the many innovative models made by students of Indian Institute of Technology Delhi that were showcased during the annual Open House on its campus this past weekend, there was one project that presented a rather different version of the “crazy frog”, a well-known animated character. Three M. Tech. students of Applied Mechanics have created an “amphibian cycle”, also known as “crazy frog”, that can run on both land and water. Equipped to handle a load of about 150 kg, the bicycle’s USP is its highly convenient seating position. “When we had begun working on our project, we thought of developing a motorbike that had the best seating position compared with other models of different companies available in the market. But later we settled for the amphibian cycle,” says Ashish Rajoriya, who worked with Rahul Shandilya and Nitin Sharma to create this unique vehicle. The team members were guided in their project by faculty member S. N. Singh. The project was part of their product design course. “The amphibian cycle has been made up of two cycles of two different sizes. We used the cycles lying in the scrap on our campus and created one cycle from it, whose front tyre was smaller than the rear tyre. It takes only 15 minutes to make this ordinary cycle running on land function like a paddle boat. It takes minutes for inflating air bags and another five minutes for attaching the frames to the air bags,” explains Rahul.
