JAIPUR: Noted Jaipur-based paediatrician Ashok Gupta has been nominated Executive Director-elect of the International Society of Tropical Paediatrics (ISTP) for a term of three years, beginning this year, to be followed by another three years as the Executive Director. Dr. Gupta’s unanimous election took place at the general body meeting of ISTP held in Manila, Philippines, in conjunction with the eighth International Congress of Tropical Paediatrics between April 11 and 14. He is the first Indian to be appointed the head-designate of the prestigious global body of paediatric leaders. Dr. Gupta – who teaches at Sawai Man Singh Medical College here – is at present the Asia Pacific representative on the paediatric academic leadership organisation and has been on the governing council of the International Paediatric Association for three years. He will work with the present ISTP Executive Director, Michael Krawinkle from Germany, for three years before taking over as head of the global body. He delivered a lecture on management of the newborn devoted to “Newborn care: Back to the basics” at the international congress. The theme of the congress, organised by ISTP in collaboration with the UP-Manila-National Institute of Health and Philippine Ambulatory Paediatric Association, was “Improving child survival and achieving U.N. Millennium Development Goal-4”. Child mortalityThe MDG-4 stipulates reduction in the child mortality rate by two-thirds across the world between 1990 and 2015.
