Udhagamandalam: The Department of Horticulture is according high priority to the promotion of organic farming, according to the Nilgiris Collector, Anandrao V.Patil.

He told presspersons at Jenda Medu, a small village near here, that it was now a 100 per cent organic farming village thanks to the concerted efforts of the villagers and the officials.

Pointing out that the residents were migrants from Mysore and Sathyamangalam who had come in search of employment about 30 years ago, he said that the enterprise displayed by them had made it possible to bring the entire cultivated area of 15.20 hectares under organic farming.

Funds

Funds had been provided by the National Horticulture Mission (NHM).

A variety of organic inputs including panchakavya and dasakavya worth Rs. 1.52 lakh had been distributed to the 32 farmers during 2006-07 for cultivating cabbage, carrot, beans and peas.

Further help was extended during 2007-08.

Mr. Patil said irrigation facilities including a check dam and water storage tanks had been provided to the villagers at Rs. 10 lakh.

Jenda Medu was now a model village for promoting organic farming. It was being used to enhance awareness among others about the benefits of organic farming such as pesticide-free fresh vegetables, a healthy soil and maintenance of the ecological balance.

Interacting with some of the farmers, the Collector pointed out that apart from being tasty and nourishing organically grown vegetables remained fresh for a longer period.

The Joint Director of Horticulture, R.Selvaraj, said that if any of the farmers wanted to switch over to organic farming the department would extend assistance.
