THEIR DAY: Transgenders or aravanis participating in Koovagam festival on Tuesday.

VILLUPURAM: The ‘aravanis’ or tansgenders, who have congregated here to participate in the annual Koovagam Koothandavar festival, staged a variety programmes under the aegis of the Villupuram Aravanis (Women) Welfare Association on Tuesday. They espoused the cause of girl children and women. The skits and dance programmes enacted by them focused on female infanticide, dowry harassment and women’s education.

They raised their voiced against female infanticide saying that every child conceived had the right to be born and there should not be any discrimination on the basis of gender. Stressing the importance of women literacy, the aravanis decried the practice of dowry harassment.

The beauty pageant, ‘Miss Koovagam,’ was also staged.According to N. Ramamurthy, district coordinator of the Association, the past two days were devoted to showcasing the skills of the aravanis in oratory, poetry and histrionics. Sport events too were conducted.

He said that the aravanis in Villupuram sought the status of women, and hence, the association was carrying the term “women” in its name. Villupuram was the first district to sanction old age pension to 20 aravanis, he said.

The aravanis had been pleading with the authorities to issue them ration cards. As many of them had come out of their families, their names could not figure in the ration cards.

For them, the ration card was an important document to obtain bank loan for setting up self-help ventures and for other legal purposes. The Association expressed displeasure over the exclusion of Radha (its president), who had been taking up their cause in various forums, from the welfare board for the aravanis.
