Visuallychallenged seek house site pattas
Staff Reporter
PUDUKOTTAI: Members of the Pudukottai unit of the National Federation of the Blind took out a procession in support of their six-point charter of demands on Tuesday.
Raising slogans, they walked down from the office of the District Disabled Rehabilitation Officer to the Public Office where they submitted a memorandum to the Revenue Divisional Officer.
Their demands, among other things, included recruitment of the visually-challenged while filling up of vacant Group C and D posts in State Government departments; expeditious allotment of house site pattas to the visually challenged in Pudukottai district; concession in bus-fares on the lines of the one implemented by the Ministry of Railway; allotment of shops for the visually challenged in the shopping complex and marts owned by the state government and local bodies; hike in the monthly Old Age Pension from Rs. 400 to Rs. 1,500 and creation of posts of Telephone Operators in key Government Departments exclusively to benefit the visually challenged.
The district president of the Federation, P. Pauldurai, said that although the district administration conducted a survey and issued a letter assuring allotment of house site pattas to 50 members of the district unit as early as March 2006, it was yet to be implemented.
The district general secretary, K. Pandian, said that the free bus-pass issued by the State Transport Corporation was district-specific, permitting the visually challenged to travel within their native district. The Railway Department allowed 75 per cent of concession in fare for the visually challenged he said, urging the State Transport Corporation to extend similar facility.
A few members of the Thanjavur unit of the Federation, led by its General secretary R. Raju also participated in the stir expressing their solidarity.
