12 dyeing, bleaching units sealed
Staff Reporter
Inspection: Tamil Nadu Pollution Control Board officials inspect a factory in Thaneerpandalpalayam, near Erode, on Tuesday.
ERODE: The Erode branch of the Tamil Nadu Pollution Control Board on Tuesday initiated action against 12 dyeing and bleaching units.
District Environment Engineer, Erode, A. Joseph Pandiaraj, said the 12 bleaching and dyeing units in Thaneerpandalpalayam violated pollution control norms by discharging effluents into open gutters.
The units that the Board acted against a couple of months ago did not mend ways. They instead let the effluents into the drains and that mixed with domestic sewage and with excess water meant for agriculture, he said.
In all, the 12 units had let out about five lakh litres of effluents a day for the past few days. The effluents stagnated on an open land, causing inconvenience to public.
Mr. Pandiaraj said the Board acted upon complaints from the affected public.
The Board had recommended severing power supply to the 12 units and sealed the units as well. The district administration under Collector T. Udhayachandran a couple of months ago initiated action the units by removing the outlets meant to carry effluents.
