This Day That Age
(From an editorial) The Red Cross has helped to foster the civilised aspects of human nature in the face of destructive wars. Thanks to its high ideals of humanitarianism, this mission of mercy, though born of war, has succeeded in extending its services to an ever-widening circle of beneficiaries even in times of peace. The zeal of its trained workers to alleviate human suffering wherever it exists has enabled them to bring relief to flood victims in various parts of this country during the past year. The liberal supplies of drugs and protective foods distributed by them in areas visited by sudden epidemics or subject to chronic malnutrition among the population have tended to mitigate their incidence. The “pre-eminent position” of the Red Cross in the field of social welfare in India is therefore understandable, considering its fine record of service during the three decades or so of its existence in this country. Its greatest contribution is the reservoir of trained men and women that it is constantly building up to meet the unexpected calls made on it and its auxiliaries. That the St. John’s Ambulance Association Brigade has been able to train the record number of 1,11,000 persons in first aid, home nursing and other courses, during the past-year, as against only 27,000 in 1947 is meritorious indeed. We have no doubt that more and more people will take note of their good work and share in what President Rajendra Prasad so aptly called “the duty and privilege” of belonging to this great organisation and rendering it all assistance. The youth of India would be adding to that strength of the Red Cross by joining the organisation in vast numbers.
