THIRUVANANTHAPURAM: Poet Sugathakumari has been chosen for the award for lifetime contribution to children’s literature, instituted by the State Institute of Children’s Literature. The award carries a statuette and a cash prize of Rs.50,000 and is the highest prize money for children’s literature in Kerala. Culture Minister M.A. Baby told a news conference here on Tuesday that Ms. Sugathakumari was chosen for the award by a panel comprising D. Vinayachandran, B. Ekbal, K.K. Krishna Kumar, Vimala Menon, S. Sivadas, Sajitha Sankar and State Institute of Children’s Literature director Rubin D’Cruz. The prize money for the award, named after the former institute director C.G. Santha Kumar, has been doubled to Rs.50,000, he said. Mr. Baby also announced awards under five categories in children’s literature. The award for poetry has gone to E. Jinan for his Kurutholakkili, for story/novel to Joseph Panackal for Neelapakshiyude Paatt, for scholarly/science writing to P.K. Rajasekharan who edited Mahacharithamaala, for translation/retelling to G. Sajan for Ente Veettukaarum Matt Jeevikalum and for illustration to Sathish K. for his illustrations in the book Manimuthukal.
