THIRUVANANTHAPURAM: The government will give financial assistance to the Roads and Bridges Corporation to complete the ongoing work of nine railway over-bridges (ROBs) in a time-bound manner and prepare a priority list of eight others to be completed soon. Finance Minister T.M. Thomas Isaac and Public Works Minister Mons Joseph told reporters here on Tuesday that work on the Nandi, Muzhupliangad, Koratty, Victoria College, Pullepady, Palakkad Town, Bekkal, Kadukkamkunnu and Athani railway over-bridges costing Rs.26 crore would be taken up immediately and the priority list of Parappanangadi, Ponnurunni, Kainatti, Kunjipally, Koilandy, Devadhar and Thirunavaya ROBs estimated to cost Rs.49 crore would be drawn up soon. The government would give Rs.37 crore to the corporation for rescheduling a Hudco loan of Rs.100 crore and toll would be introduced at the 13 bridges constructed by the corporation to help overcome financial crisis. Toll would be collected after taking the local people into confidence. The toll system was the only way to improve the financial condition of the corporation and equip it to secure more loans to take new works, they said. A long-term maintenance contract for executing heavy road maintenance works would be introduced this year. Five-year maintenance contract would be introduced in Sabarimala roads this year. The executive engineers of Pathanmthitta and Kottayam districts had been told to submit detailed project reports, they said.
