KOCHI: The Kerala Catholic Bishops’ Council (KCBC) has decided to admit students into the self-financing professional colleges run by the Churches under it based on merit in the new academic year. A meeting of the council’s commission for education here on Tuesday resolved to reserve seats for talented students coming from the economically backward communities. There will be four per cent reservation for socially and educationally backward Latin Catholic students in all institutions. Five per cent of the seats in engineering and medical colleges will be reserved for students belonging to the Scheduled Castes and Scheduled Tribes. Nursing colleges will reserve three per cent of the seats for these candidates. There will be two per cent reservation for Dalit Catholics in medical colleges. Five per cent of the seats in engineering colleges and three per cent in nursing colleges will be reserved for them. ScholarshipsStudents from economically backward sections will be admitted into 25 per cent of the seats in medical colleges. They will be provided scholarships to complete the programme. In engineering colleges, 10 such students will be admitted every year. Scholarships will be provided to eligible students in nursing colleges. The meeting condemned what it called repeated attempts by the government to tarnish the social commitment of self-financing colleges.
