Uptrend maintained in Sensex

MUMBAI: The Bombay Stock Exchange benchmark Sensex gained 45 points on buying by funds in fundamentally strong stocks, maintaining the upward march for the seventh straight session.

The Sensex, which recorded a gain of nearly 976 points in last six trading sessions, added 44.54 points to close at 16783.87 as funds remained net buyers influenced by better quarterly results. The key index touched the day’s high of 16853.96 and low of 16597.53 points. The broad-based Nifty of the National Stock Exchange rose by 12.30 points at 5049.30, after touching the day’s high of 5074.25 and low of 4994.05 points. The market moved up on the back of a firming trend in realty, metal and capital goods sector. Realty index rose the most by 230.37 points at 7906.14, followed by metal index by 314.69 points at 15529.38.

Capital goods index rose by 259.32 points at 13928.71. Midcap index rose by 54.36 points at 7037.62 and the smallcap index by 45.25 points at 8798.08. — PTI
