Private TV channel flashes his face and airs the statement He dismisses the theory that Acharya killed Das
Biranchi Das with child-marathoner Buddhia Singh. A file photo. BHUBANESWAR: A week after Bhubaneswar-Cuttack police groped in the dark for getting a lead in the investigation into murder of Biranchi Das, former coach of child marathoner Buddhia Singh, the case finally saw light at the end of the tunnel. A person, who claimed to be a member of the group that killed Das, was taken into custody by Madhya Pradesh police at Bhopal on Tuesday. Chagala, a henchman of gangster Raja Acharya, the prime suspect in the case, surrendered while Madhya Pradesh police took him to an undisclosed location at the instance of the Orissa police. A four-member police team led by Suresh Mohapatra, Assistant Commissioner of Police, had been sent to Bhopal to bring Chagala on a transit remand. Director General of Police Gopal Chandra Nanda said the person, who admitted to have been involved in the crime, would be thoroughly interrogated after he was brought here. The day unfolded as a complete surprise for the city police, which had no clue about the killers. The top police hierarchy got to know about Chagala when a private TV channel flashed his face and aired the statement live from Bhopal in the morning. It soon contacted Madhya Pradesh police. In his statement, Chagala dismissed the notion that Acharya had killed Das. He said the conspiracy to kill Buddhia’s former coach was hatched at the behest of a senior IAS official while two music video actresses and a studio owner were present at the meeting. Chagala told the channel that he had decided to surrender when he had no money. He had been staying near the Bhopal railway station for last four days after slipping out of Orissa.
