THURAIYUR: A training programme aimed at imparting various skills to adolescent girls and boys of Thuraiyur block has come as a boon to the youth to prepare themselves to face the challenges, free from any agony.

The ‘adolescent development programme’ sponsored by the Union Ministry of Youth Affairs and Sports, is being implemented by the Village Reconstruction Movement, a Tiruchi-based NGO.

The youths are being taught the techniques relating to getting over the hurdles, crisis management and personality development. Every minute detail about various topics ranging from personal hygiene to environmental protection, and from awareness on AIDS prevention to women’s rights is explained to them, says the secretary of the Movement, S. Balakrishnan.

To bring out the latent talent of the youth, special sessions are also organised in which the boys and girls display their skills. “A session on waste-to-wealth is what attracts most,” he says.

A group-discussion is also held when the youth explain their crisis management techniques. Special importance is given to practice of ‘yoga’, Mr. Balakrishnan says.

Basic skills such as filling in the deposit and withdrawal forms at banks, reservation forms at railway stations are also imparted, while vocational skills on making vermi-compost forms the highlight of the programme.

The camp, which commenced on April 10, is being organised at various villages in Thuraiyur block and concludes on May 31.
