Earth Day observed in city

Special Correspondent

Thiruvananthapuram: Lectures, public meetings, campaigns, quiz competitions and planting of saplings marked the observance of Earth Day in the city on Tuesday.

A function organised at the Centre for Earth Science Studies appealed to the government to strictly enforce vehicular pollution control measures.

Plastic ban praised

E.P. Yesodharan, Executive Vice-President of Kerala State Council for Science, Technology and Environment inaugurated the function. The meeting appreciated the efforts made by the State government to ban plastic bags of less than 50 micron thickness.

Speakers who addressed the gathering hailed the Central government decision to constitute an Earth Science Forum to coordinate the activities against climate change and to provide incentives for solar power generation as part of the Earth Day observance.

M. Baba, Director, CESS, presided over the meeting. Kendriya Vidyalaya, Pattom, and VSSC Central School, Thumba, won the first and second prizes in the quiz programme conducted for senior school students. Air Force Station, Thiruvananthapuram joined hands with Uday Samudra Leisure Hotel to organise a Earth Day programme at the Air Force Headquarters, Sanghumukham. Air force officers, airmen and their families planted saplings on the station campus. Station Commander Group Captain M.J.K. Thampi and Ms. Suganthi Thampi inaugurated the planting. IAF personnel committed themselves to a campaign to check environmental deterioration.

The Uday Samdura team extended their support by distributing marigold seeds to the public at different parts of the city. Prizes were distributed to the winners of a painting contest for children.

At Technopark

An eco-awareness campaign by UST Global marked the Earth Day celebrations at the Technopark campus here. The highlight of the day was a ‘Pookalam’ showcasing ecology messages backed by a poster campaign and signature campaign to garner support for the initiative. “Working at Technopark, the greenest technopolis, is a constant reminder of our commitment to live in harmony with nature,” said Alexander Varghese, head of the Thiruvananthapuram centre of UST Global.
