Leaders scout for new segments

Some have changed parties to get ticket after delimitation

Santhemaralli constituency has been scrapped

Srinivas Prasad will contest from Nanjangud

CHAMARAJANAGAR: The delimitation of Assembly constituencies in Chamarajanagar district has forced former MLAs to migrate to new Assembly constituencies.

Some of them have also changed parties to get ticket to contest in the Assembly elections.

Earlier, Santhemaralli and Kollegal constituencies were reserved for Scheduled Castes. Kollegal is still a reserved constituency. But after delimitation Santhemaralli segment was scrapped.

The areas in this constituency are now part of Nanjangud and Varuna segments in Mysore district and Chamarajanagar and Kollegal segments and Chamarajanagar district.

Because of the dissolution of Santhemaralli, R. Druvanarayan of the Congress, who had represented the constituency and A.R. Krishna Murthy of Janata Dal (Secular), who represented the constituency twice have been forced to migrate to Kollegal Assembly segment.

Strong candidate

Mr. Murthy could emerge as a strong candidate , as Santhemaralli hobli, which has 52,000 voters and was a part of the erstwhile Santhemaralli Assembly segment, will come under Kollegal constituency.

V. Srinivas Prasad of the Congress will contest from Nanjangud constituency. G.N. Nanjundaswamy and S. Jayanna who had represented Kollegal Assembly segment earlier were denied Congress ticket.

Created history

Mr. Druvanarayan had created history in the 2004 elections by defeating the Janata Dal (Secular) candidate Mr. Murthy by a single vote to win the seat at Santhemaralli.

Mr. Druvanarayan will face Mr. Murthy in Kollegal once again. Of the 1.32 lakh voters in the erstwhile Santhemaralli Assembly segment, 45,000 voters in Kavalande hobli have been shifted to the neighbouring constituency in Mysore district and remaining voters have been shifted to Kollegal and Chamarajanagar constituencies in Chamarajanagar district.

In Kollegal, 61 polling booths have been identified as hypersensitive and 109 polling booths have been identified as sensitive. The segment has 1.79 lakh voters, of which 87,976 are women and 91,772 are men.
