Maoists formally stake claim in Nepal

Ameet Dhakal

KATHMANDU: The Communist Party of Nepal (Maoist) has formally staked claim to lead a coalition government as the largest party in the Constituent Assembly. A central secretariat meeting of the Maoists, held at its Chairman Prachanda’s residence decided to lead the future coalition and appealed to all parties to join the government.

According to the final tally, the Maoists got 120 seats under the first-past-the-post system, one seat short of simple majority. The votes under the proportional system are being counted. Maoists are likely to get about 30 per cent votes — about 102 seats of the 335.
