KANNUR: Air-India stunned Instituto Buenos Aires de Futbol at the Muncipal Jawahar Stadium here on Tuesday night. Nobody would have anticipated the Argentines’ 5-1 defeat after the way they played against Bayelsa United, Nigeria, a couple of days earlier. Paresh Shivalkar was the star for the Mumbai side, performing a hat-trick. Surojit Roy and Bashiru M. Abbas were the other goal-scorers for the winner, while Frederico Rodriguez netted the consolation goal for Instituto, which was let down by its custodian, Marcos Juarez. Instituto was reduced to 10 men when Ramiro Rotello was sent off for handling the ball in the 25th minute; Shivalkar scored from the penalty to make it 2-0. Air-India’s first goal had come in the 18th minute when Surojit finished off a beautiful move featuring Samson Singh and Shivalkar down the left. It became 3-0 in the 37th minute, when Shivalkar punished Marcos, who advanced a bit too much. In the second half, the Argentines did try to make a comeback, but soon found themselves 0-4 down, when Bashiru headed home a fine cross from Michael Tayo in the 48th minute. In the 65th minute, Frederico scored off a deflection of the keeper to make it 4-1. Then, in the 89th minute, Shivalkar completed the rout.
