CHENNAI: The gulf in the standards between the district and city teams came to the fore again to render another flood of goals in the Champion Club football tournament at the Nehru stadium on Tuesday. At the end of the day both the city teams — Nethaji and Arrows — moved into the quarterfinal phase. Nethaji defeated Youth FC Nagapattinam 9-1 while Arrows, despite looking goal shy, recorded a 5-0 win over Selvam FC, Namakkal. The contest produced little to cheer. As though that was not enough was the eyesore of having to witness players of one team (Namakkal) with fancy numbers on their backs. Granted a ‘colour clash’ had led to the need for replacement jerseys of another colour. But why allow a number stream that does not conform to the rules of the game? Arrows, which was a revelation in the recent CFA senior division league, was ready for a big margin win. But after a 3-0 first half, the team slowed down and the players looked more intent in passing the ball around than designing an attacking pattern. For the record, Ezekiel (two), Ravi Moses, Murugan and Merwin (both substitutes) were the scorers. In the earlier match, Ogar Sundyayuk scored five goals including a hat-trick. Gunasekaran, Guru (two) and Sugan were the other scorers for Nethaji. Md Udhuman scored the lone goal for Youth club. IOB records winIndian Overseas Bank started the campaign with a four-set victory over Sports Development Authority of Tamil Nadu (SDAT) in Pool B of the Panimalar-John Memorial all-India volleyball tournament at the Mayor Radhakrishnan Stadium on Tuesday. IOB won 29-27, 24-26, 25-20, 25-17. Moses and Raja were outstanding for the winner. In the women’s section, Southern Railway overcame Dr. Sivanthi Club 25-15, 12-25, 27-29, 25-23, 15-12. Mr. Sivanthi Adityan, President, Volleyball Federation of India, inaugurated the tournament.
