Iranian film

portrays a day

in the life of a woman voting

agent

Bangalore: When all the buzz is about elections, here is a film show that focusses on the same theme.

Though it speaks of a different country and a different context, there is sure to be some resonance.

Pedestrian Pictures has organised a screening of well-known Iranian film-maker Babak Payami’s 2001 classic, Secret Ballot, on Saturday. The film covers a day in the life of a woman voting agent on an island in Iran.

Election duty

The story unfolds at a tiny two-man Army post on a remote island. On the voting day, an election agent is due to arrive by boat. It turns out to be a young woman who is to collect the official voting box.

With the soldier on duty escorting her around, she diligently goes around looking for voters.

A true believer in the importance of voting, she will not let anything or anyone come in the way of her dedicated work. The woman leaves the soldier confused and angry since he believes that only a man is fit for jobs like that of a voting agent.

The film tracks their tumultuous journey together along which both their notions of life, politics and gender stereotypes are overturned.

Secret ballot

By sunset, the woman’s idealistic notions are more down to earth. The solider discovers that there is more to voting by secret ballot than he imagined.

The film show is at the Institute of Agricultural Technologies on Queen’s Road between 5 p.m. and 7.30 p.m on Saturday.
