BHUBANESWAR: With the mercury level remaining above 40 degree Celsius at several places across Orissa, the number of deaths reportedly occurred due to intense heatwave condition on Wednesday went up to 36, a jump of eight compared to previous day. The State government confirmed that five persons died of sunstroke. According to State Revenue Control Room, deaths have been reported from as many as 15 districts. Coastal district of Puri accounted the highest -- six deaths -- followed by Jajpur and Khurda districts with four deaths each. Three heatwave related deaths were reported from industrial pocket of Angul and districts, including Balasore, Cuttack, Ganjam, Balasore and Nayagarh two deaths each in the current heatwave conditions that began last week. Meanwhile, the Bhubaneswar meteorological centre extended their warning for heatwave conditions by another 48 hours on Wednesday. As per the revenue control room sources, 43.3 degree Celsius was recorded in Jharsuguda while its neighbouring towns such as Sambalpur, Hirakud and Sundargarh had temperature above 40 degree Celsius. In the interior pockets such as Titlagarh and Bolangir, the temperature level hovered around 45 degree Celsius on Tuesday. In Bhubaneswar and Cuttack, the condition was relatively cool. However, the impact of intense heat could be seen on daily life. Thin attendance was reported in government offices.
