Plea to act against granite quarries
Staff Reporter
Hosur: Members of various organisations staged a demonstration here on Wednesday urging the State Government to initiate stringent action against granite quarries, which polluted the water sources.
The demonstration was jointly organised by the Association of Consumer and Environment Protection and Watch (ACEPW), Tamil Nadu Environment Council (TNEC), Tamil Nadu Rivers Protection Federation, Sanathkumar River Protection Movement, Federation for Associations of Consumers and Environment in Tamil Nadu (FACE-IT).
L. Antonysamy, State convener of the TNEC said that the world was facing severe environmental and livelihood problems due to global warming and climate change.
Many island countries are facing the threat of extinction.
Developing countries such as India are facing reduction in crop yield and erratic rainfall.
Resources
As a result the country has to rethink its developmental paradigm, as rapid industrialisation is very much contributing to global warming and climate change and affecting the livelihood resources of the common people especially in the rural and hill areas.
Mr. Antonysamy warned against deforestation and setting up granite and other quarries in the forest hill areas.
He said that quarries, set up on the banks of Sanathkumar River had grossly violated the laws.
The quarries have encroached the rivers and release their waste into the river polluting it.
