18,000 cr. set aside to supply irrigated water

Kanupur canal to be modernised at cost of Rs. 132 cr.

GOLLA KANDUKURU (NELLORE): The Government has set aside around Rs. 18,000 crore to supply irrigated water to the farming community across the State, according to Irrigation Minister Ponnala Lakshmaiah.

Speaking after laying a foundation stone to works pertaining to Kanupur canal modernisation here on Wednesday, the Minister claimed that the Government would do the needful to bailout the farming community from the debt trap. “We will come out with a scheme that will extend the debt waiver facility to farmers, who have promptly re-paid the loans in addition to the scheme announced by the Centre in the Union Budget.” Mr. Lakshmaiah said that Kanupur canal will be modernised with Rs. 132 crore to supply irrigated water to 44,000 acres in addition to the existing 18,000 crore. “Besides repairs will be taken up for 84 tanks that come under the canal with a view to supplying irrigated water to 62,000 acres.”

Outlining the details of the modernisation programme, he said that lining works to the extent of 55 km would be taken up with Rs. 72 crore while modernisation works would be taken up for main branch canal with Rs. 60 crore. “Thus the ruling Congress has taken up modernisation works with regard to Somasila, Telugu Ganga, Kanupur canal, Sangam barrage, Pennar delta and others with Rs. 2,500 crore in the district.” Information and Public Relations Minister Anam Ramnarayana Reddy, Nellore MLA Anam Vivekananda Reddy and others were also present.
