NREGP employment from May 1 in Malappuram

MALAPPURAM: Jobs will be made available through grama panchayats from May 1 to those who have registered under the National Rural Employment Guarantee Programme (NREGP).

The government has directed all grama panchayats to launch at least one scheme to offer jobs to those who have registered under the NREGP, District Collector M.C. Mohandas said.

The grama panchayats have also been directed to procure implements required for the job assurance schemes they chalk out. The distribution of job cards will be completed by April 30, Mr. Mohandas said.

As many as 2,10,474 people from 1,04,852 families have registered for employment under the NREGP in the district. NREGP project officer K. Shoukath Ali said there were 40 grama panchayats in the district where more than a thousand families had registered for jobs.

Nilambur, Thuvvoor, Pothukallu and Vazhikkadavu panchayats topped in the district with 4,500; 4,466; 3,703; and 3,369 families, respectively, having registered.

The authorities called upon the people to come forward to register for jobs under the NREGP. The respective panchayat officials can be contacted for registration.

The data entry of job applicants has already begun. Grama panchayats have been asked to buy digital cameras to take photographs of the applicants.

The move has evoked protest from photographers in the State. The All Kerala Photographers Association launched a dharna in front of the district panchayat here recently, seeking withdrawal of the move.
