Ratna Kushnoor quits Council

Staff Correspondent

Her son is an aspirant for Congress ticket from Bidar South

BIDAR: Ratna V. Kushnoor, Congress MLC, has resigned from the Legislative Council in a bid to make way for her son to get the party ticket to contest the Assembly elections from Bidar South constituency.

Her term was supposed to end after two months.

Party leaders said that Ms. Kushnoor might have resigned because the All India Congress Committee had passed a resolution stating that if a person had been nominated to a post from the party, another member from his or her family would not be given ticket to contest elections.

“I was elected to the Legislative Council in July 2002. I have resigned on moral grounds,” Ms. Kushnoor told The Hindu on Wednesday.

“I learnt about the resolution from senior party leaders and decided to resign from the post to help my son, Pradeep Kushnoor, in securing the party ticket without any hurdles,” she said.

Ms. Kushnoor said that she faxed her resignation letter to the AICC president Sonia Gandhi and president of the Karnataka Pradesh Congress Committee M. Mallikarjun Kharge four days ago.

She said that her son, who is a zilla panchayat member and holds the post of chairman of the standing committee on health and education, was a strong contender for the ticket. However, she added, “There is no chance of a rebellion against the official candidate if my son is denied ticket.”

Her contention is that no member from Lingayat community has represented Bidar segment in the Assembly after her husband, Veershetty Kushnoor, won the seat in 1978. Mr. Pradeep Kushnoor is camping in New Delhi.

Meanwhile, Rajshekar Patil, son of MLC Basavraj Patil Humnabad, has been given the Congress ticket from Humnabad constituency.

Mr. Basavraj Patil’s term in the Legislative Council will end after one and a half years.
