THIRUVANANTHAPURAM: Even as the government has drawn flak over its decision to issue temporary transfers to doctors to cover up for the shortage of teaching staff in Medical Colleges where the Medical Council is currently conducting inspections, the Cabinet has decided to extend the service of 10 doctors in Medical Colleges who were due to retire in April/May. The extension in service is being given to these doctors for a period of two years as there are none to succeed them in the respective departments through promotion, it is claimed. This is the first time that the government has chosen to give selective extension of service to doctors. The Kerala Government Medical College Teachers’ Association has expressed its strong protest as over 450 of posts of doctors in junior cadres are lying vacant in various Medical Colleges, with the Government making no effort to fill these posts. Those who have been given service extension are: Alappuzha Medical College: Dr. Mohan, Associate Prof.; Prof. Salahuddeen (Radiotherapy Department); Kozhikode Medical College: Prof. Sudhakaran (Radiotherapy), Prof. Rajaratnam (Nephrology), Prof. Kunju Koya (Psychiatry), Prof. Jagadish (Plastic Surgery); Kottayam Medical College: Prof. A. Vimala (Nephrology); Thiruvananthapuram Medical College: Dr. Srikanthan, Associate Prof and Dr. Abdul Latheef, Asst. Prof. (Infectious Diseases); Ashraf Ali, Associate Prof. (Psychiatry).
