3,000 ITI students likely to get jobs at three-day fair in the Capital

NEW DELHI: Chief Minister Sheila Dikshit on Wednesday inaugurated a job fair, “Sopan 2008”, at ITI Pusa here and expressed confidence that ITI certificate holders would be able to get about 3,000 jobs in 54 national and multi-national firms during the three-day event.

The fair has been organised by the Delhi Government’s Department of Training and Technical Education and is expected to provide an opportunity to about 10,000 students to interact with officials from various companies for securing jobs.

Job-oriented course

Speaking on the occasion, Ms. Dikshit announced that the Department of Training and Technical Education would start new job-oriented courses in ITI which would cater to the needs of industries.

She said the job fair had also been organised to serve as a bridge between the students and industry as it would seek to strike a balance between the demands of the sector and expectations of the students.

Global economy

Terming this first job fair as an attempt to broaden the horizons of the institutions and instructors through a better understanding of industry’s technical manpower needs, the Chief Minister said in a global economy it was essential for a nation to supply good quality and cost-effective skilled work force for different trades.

Significance

In Delhi, the 1.29 lakh industrial units that constitute the manufacturing sector employ around 14.4 lakh workers.

Since there has been a spurt in the demand for a technically qualified skilled work force for both industries and service organisations, such an employment fair assumes great significance, it was pointed out.

Department of Training and Technical Education Secretary G. Narendra Kumar said help of various major industrial players like Maruti Udyog, HMT Limited and NDPL had been taken for up-gradation of ITIs into centre of excellence from improving the employment prospects of the students being trained there.
