One hurt in attack on pilgrims

Staff Reporter

BAPATLA (GUNTUR DT): One person was seriously injured and several others sustained minor injuries, when a group of local fishermen allegedly beat up a group of pilgrims from Rudraram village in Medak district at Suryalanka beach on Wednesday. The pilgrims were on their way back to their district after touring Bhadrachalam, Vijayawada and Ponnur.

The group of about 150 devotees reportedly picked up a quarrel with the local fishermen and in the ensuing clash, several of them suffered injuries.

The fishermen allegedly used fishing oars to hit the pilgrims.

The reluctance of the police at the Beach police station and the Town police to register a case further aggravated the problem.

Dharna staged

The pilgrims staged a dharna in front of the Town Police Station. Town police confirmed that four persons, who took part in the attack, were brought to the station for questioning.
