Vaccine for FMD on anvil

Special Correspondent

Bangalore: Biovet, a Bangalore-based company specialising in developing animal biotech products, has established a facility at Malur, 30 km from Bangalore, to develop and produce vaccines for diseases such as the foot and mouth disease in cattle. The company plans to launch its vaccine in 2008-09.

The facility, which conforms to Bio Safety Level-4 (BSL-4) standard, is the only one conforming to the standard in Asia and only the second worldwide, said Krishna Ella, chairman, Biovet. Dr. Krishna said foot and mouth disease, being highly contagious, can travel long distances affecting large number of livestock.

The disease affects cloven-footed animals such as cattle, sheep and horses.
