“Centre should intervene in Sri Lanka situation”
Special Correspondent
A resolution was suggested by Chief Minister M. Karunanidhi
CHENNAI: The Centre should arrange for talks between the two warring factions in Sri Lanka to establish peace, the Tamil Nadu Assembly has said.
“To establish peace in Sri Lanka, the Centre should come forward to organise meaningful talks to find a proper political solution,” the resolution added, which was adopted by a voice vote.
The resolution was suggested by Chief Minister M. Karunanidhi, who defused a tense atmosphere caused by the rhetoric of the Pattali Makkal Katchi and the Marumalarchi Dravida Munnetra Kazhagam members accusing the Centre on one side, and that of the Congress, defending the Centre on the other. The AIADMK members watched with amusement even as allies of the ruling party, the DMK, fought bitterly over the wording of the resolution.
Mr. Karunanidhi said members had to remember that the government functioned under the Indian Union. Any idea that was spoken in the House and resolution adopted should not try to harm India’s integrity and sovereignty. He said the government did not have a difference of opinion on adopting a resolution on the issue and added that the struggle for rights in Sri Lanka has been going on from the time of Selva. After some time, it became an armed struggle. But most of these efforts have not yielded any result.
Drawing a parallel with other such movements across the world, Mr. Karunanidhi said that if the fighters had remained united, they could have attained freedom like the fighters in Nepal. They could have attained victory like fighters in some other parts of the world. When most movements of this nature have tasted success, this movement in a small country of the size of Sri Lanka could not succeed because the fighters were not united.
The aim of the fighters seemed to be to fight among themselves.
