Some 776 bridges will be constructed along Western Canal Irrigation Executive Engineer to monitor the modernisation works GUNTUR: The long-awaited Krishna Western Delta modernisation works are all set to begin soon with the State Government finalizing tenders for four packages with an outlay of Rs.636.78 crore and an earth work component of Rs.11.65 for modernization of the existing canal network in Guntur and Prakasam districts. Hyderabad-based Ramky Infrastructure Limited and Progressive Constructions would be executing the works. Plans for the modernization of 150-year-old Krishna Western Delta were long pending. The proposals received a fillip during the visit of Chief Minister Y.S. Rajasekhara Reddy three-and-a-half years ago to the Ogni-affected villages in Guntur and Prakasam districts. It was then that Mr. Reddy assured that the delta modernization works would be taken at a cost of Rs.5,000 crore. First phaseThe first phase of works would see the modernization of canals extending to a length of 605 KM in Guntur and Prakasam districts. As many as 776 new bridges would be constructed along the Western Canal starting from Prakasam Barrage. Works have also been finalized for the replacement of works, strengthening of the bunds and desilting of canals along the delta. “With the construction of bridges, better connectivity facilities will be ensured. Modernisation of canals will thwart inundation of canals,” Superintending Engineer P. Gopala Krishna Reddy said on Wednesday. The works would be monitored by the irrigation and executive engineer of Krishna Western Delta and Tenali. A meeting was held at Tenali to discuss the modalities of the work. The officials have also finalized Earth Works to be taken at a cost of Rs.12 crore. The works will be taken up for Nizampatnam canal, KWD distributaries, East side canal, KW main canal, Kommamur canal etc. The irrigation department has invited tenders for five package modernization works worth Rs.990.61 crore. The works include minor, medium and minor drains. As per the proposals, 1870 k.m. drains of three categories would be improved and another 300 new bridges will be constructed on the drains. The tenders for these works will be opened on April 28, the superintending engineer added.
