TNEB raids tailoring units

Staff Reporter

KARUR: The recent search operation by the flying squad of the Tamil Nadu Electricity Board (TNEB) in many houses in Rayanur of Karur town is “too little and too late” if adherence to power board rules are any consideration.

While the “affected” tailoring and stitching unit operators cry foul, albeit sans any legal backing, people are wondering how the local TNEB officials failed to take note of the trade that was thriving illegally under their nose.

On Tuesday, a special squad of the TNEB Enforcement wing, Tiruchi, that has jurisdiction over Tiruchi, Thanjavur and Villupuram circles led by Executive Engineer Alagappan descended on numerous houses in Rayanur on specific information that domestic power connections were being misused for industrial or commercial purposes in the area.

They slapped fines ranging between Rs. 2,000 and Rs. 60,000 on the unit operators.

Rayanur abounds with stitching and tailoring units that feed the hundreds of textile export units by undertaking job works related to stitching and tailoring requirements.

Demonstration

The unit operators, who have between two and 20 electricity powered tailoring machines and provide employment to scores of skilled workers directly, demonstrated against the TNEB action.

They staged a road roko on the Rayanur Four Roads Junction road near Thirumanilayur. Police rushed to the spot, pacified the protestors and made them disperse.

Since the public protested, the TNEB drive against illegal power use and misuse of domestic power connections was suspended for the time being.

TNEB officials clarified that it was illegal to use the domestic connection for commercial purposes. While the minimum tariff for domestic connections was Re. 0.65 paise per unit, it was Rs. 5.30 per unit for commercial connections.

The TNEB was suffering losses as the “shrewd stitching unit operators” were running the units without sanction. The operators have been given time to get the domestic connections converted into commercial connections.

Stitching unit operators claim that in over 1,000 houses in Rayanur stitching and tailoring units were functioning. They could bag orders and job works only if they had at least 10 machines. “We would be getting only a paltry sum as return after meeting all expenses. If the authorities direct us to carry on the work at commercial tariff rate then we would be in the doldrums. The State Government should come to our rescue,” they said.
