TIRUNELVELI: The sixth Vice-Chancellor of Manonmaniam Sundaranar University R. Thirugnana Sambandam Sabapathi Mohan (55), who assumed office here on Wednesday, has assured that the modifications to be done shortly in the curriculum would cater to the needs of the industries to come up in the Nanguneri Special Economic Zone (SEZ).

Speaking to reporters after taking charge, Mr. Sabapathi Mohan, an Organic Chemistry Professor with Annamalai University, Chidambaram, for 33 years, said that though the nature of the industries to come up at the SEZ was not known as of now, the modifications to be effected in the curriculum of undergraduate and post-graduate courses would fulfill the needs of the hi-tech units and hence the products of the university and its affiliated colleges would be ‘employable’.

The Vice-Chancellor said new topics would be added to the curriculum based on the industrial needs by having a close coordination with the new manufacturing units to come up in this region.

He said that special emphasis would be on getting substantial grant from State and Central governments, University Grants Commission and domestic and international financial institutions to strengthen infrastructure facilities in the university.

Dr. Sabapathi Mohan, who has guided 10 Ph.D. and 20 M.Phil. students and published more than 50 research papers in national and international research journals and presented several papers at seminars, informed that a team from Norway was scheduled to visit the Centre for Marine Sciences and Technology at Rajakkalmangalam in Kanyakumari district on April 24 to explore possibilities of collaborating with the institution in the academic and research fronts.

He has served in the senate of Annamalai University for six years as a Syndicate member for three years and in its Academic Council for 20 years and has visited United Kingdom, Switzerland, Germany, Singapore, Thailand and Malaysia for academic and co-curricular activities.

He has served in the National Committee for Social Welfare when former Chief Justice of India, Justice R.S. Pathak was its chairman.

The Registrar of the university, P. Chellathurai, was present.
