Corrections and Clarifications

>>The Guardian in its “Corrections and Clarifications” column says “It is incorrect to say that the artificial retinas fitted in a trial at Moorfields eye hospital in London will allow people with inherited blindness to read and recognise faces (“Bionic’ eye gives blind people some sight’, page 5, April 22). An edited quote from Greg Cosendai, director for Europe of the company that designed the artificial retinas, Second Sight, made it seem as though he was talking about these devices, when in fact he was referring to future developments.” The article appeared in most editions of The Hindu (“Newscape” page, April 23, 2008), titled “The blind shall now see: a ‘bionic’ eye at work”.

>>The last paragraph in a report “India, Chile sign four pacts” (April 22, 2008) was “She [President Pratibha Patil] met the Margarita Karoiuka, the wife of the late Vishnu Karoika, who designed and development the Plaza. “We are very thankful that your husband did this for us,” Ms. Patil told her Chile is shaped like a chili.” There were a few queries on what this meant. It was an editing error. The original paragraph was “… ‘We are very thankful that your husband did this for us,’ Ms. Patil told her. The longest country in the world, Chile is shaped like a chili.”

The earlier part of the paragraph should have been “She met Margarita Karoiuka, wife of the late Vishnu Karoika, who designed and developed the Plaza.”

>>The sixth paragraph in a report “New cricket, old nationalism” (Op-Ed, April 19, 2008) was “Anil Kumble is entitled to our devotion, support, affection and applause because he leads a team consisting of fellow-Indians; and, opposing Kumble is a Ricky Ponting or a Graham Smith, leading men who belong to different country and race.” It should have been Graeme Smith.

>>In “sudoku” that is published daily, more than one solution is possible. No claim is made that the solution published in the paper is unique. Many readers have written pointing out such instances.
